RIHGA Royal Hotel Osaka – Vignette Collection

With nearly 90 years of history, the RIHGA Royal Hotel has long been cherished by distinguished guests and travelers from around the world. In April 2025, the hotel joined IHG Hotels & Resorts’ Vignette Collection. After an extensive renovation, it reopened in grand style as the RIHGA Royal Hotel Osaka – Vignette Collection. RENS led the interior design, from concept development through to the entrance, reception, and guest rooms, shaping a renewed vision of timeless hospitality.

Originally designed by the renowned architect Isoya Yoshida , the hotel embodies a fusion of Japanese tradition and Western culture. Its location on Nakanoshima—an island cradled by the Dojima and Tosabori rivers and often described as “floating on water”—has long thrived as the hub of Osaka’s economy and culture through waterborne trade. To draw upon this legacy and deepen the character of the site, the design concept was defined as the fusion of traditional beauty and water.

At the entrance, guests are greeted by a striking gateway that symbolizes the hotel’s new spirit. Pipes of varying lengths, meticulously crafted by master artisans and layered in staggered formation, create a floating sensation reminiscent of the water’s surface.

The reception area extends this narrative with folding screens of Nishijin brocade, combining rich textures with the fukurashi-ori weaving technique to render the dynamism of water in three dimensions. Here, respect and hospitality come together in harmony to welcome guests.

Ascending to the guestroom floors, visitors encounter projections of moonlight and rippling water guiding them toward their rooms. Inside, abstract water motifs flow across the flooring, while the beds seem to float above, evoking a sense of lightness and openness. Grounded in the hotel’s corporate Royal Green , the interiors preserve and restore Western-style cornices and fittings, carrying forward the dignity of the past. The headboards feature ink paintings inspired by water, where the gradation and blurring of ink capture its movement, power, and three-dimensional depth.

At the RIHGA Royal Hotel Osaka – Vignette Collection, guests from across the globe can immerse themselves in Japan’s traditional culture and master craftsmanship, leaving a lasting impression on both senses and spirit. We hope each stay offers moments of effortless relaxation and peace of mind.
