Residence in Tokyo
RENS had the pleasure of working on the
interior design of an upper floor residence of a high-rise building in Tokyo. The
floor plan of this residence was not in an orderly form including the position
of the columns, therefore, we designed a plan to create a comfortable space for
the residents that accommodates their lifestyles.
In the living and dining rooms, a sense of
unity was created by covering the center of the ceilings with ajiro or
wickerwork[y1] , which has long been used in Japanese architecture and kimono
design. By establishing a focal point in both rooms and arranging furniture and
carpeting accordingly, cohesiveness was created to form spaces where the family
can gather.
Our design also features lacquer that has
long been used in the construction of buildings and iron rust, which is
produced as the building ages, with both gaining depth with use. In the
bedroom, the walls are decorated with Nishijin brocade by HOSOO, with the
intricate weave giving an exquisite feel of traditional Japanese culture.
For this residence, it was our aim to create a comfortable and long-lasting stylish home for its residents by using materials that will deepen with age and use.
